*a fancy robot that helps smaller labs cut down on pipetting time
Client
Redbud Labs is a microfluidics and biotech startup that specializes in using advanced microfluidic technology to simplify complex sample preparation workflows and make automation accessible to all labs
My Role
I led the design of 5 key user-facing touch-points on beta launch version of device to connect physical and digital interfaces and curate a cohesive branded user experience
hardware
MISSION
Re-design the cartridge sub-assembly to reliably detect different cartridge types and limit user variability in cartridge positioning
SKILLS
Detection
Before: Limit switch - finnicky, trigger spring pushes on cartridge, unable to distinguish cartridge types
Now: Photogate - no option for user error, no physical interaction (lifetime wear), multiple sensors allows for cartridge type detection
Registration
Before: Friction fit - imprecise, difficult to remove, lack of user confirmation
Now: Spring-loaded guide pins paired with notches in the cartridge allows for easy insertion, with a satisfying *click*
Control
I went from breadboard to BOM, designing an additional circuit module that was specifically optimized for troubleshooting. It used LEDs, jumpers, and test points to easily confirm key signals

MISSION
Design packaging (layout, design) for device and for cartridge refill kits to be sent to round 1 beta customers, and create user information guides
SKILLS
Unboxing
Device: To be shipped once, includes device, power cable, USB drive, and cartridge loading dock.
Cartridge Kits: To be shipped repeatedly, includes hazardous materials handling and material-specific storage upon receiving (refrigeration)
Documentation
Device: Includes instructions for unboxing, setup, and action items related to beta testing
Cartridge Kits: Details the process for preparing and using cartridges and storing when not in use
